Too much on kids' plates

PARENTS are putting their children at risk of obesity by putting too much food on their plates, a study shows. Anxious to ensure their kids get enough nutrients for optimal health, parents are giving children oversized portions or too much food throughout the day

The Kids And Nutrition report, released today, found one in three mothers admitted giving their child too much food, and 82 per cent believed when their child left food on their plate it was because they were fussy eaters.

Sydney pediatrician Michael Kohn said being difficult or contrary at meal times and only eating a few bites was normal child behaviour. He said children had "a tremendous capacity" to self-regulate their food intake to ensure adequate energy and nutrition and parents shouldn't force a child to continue eating when they say they're full.

The survey of 302 mothers with children aged between 1 and 7, conducted online by Galaxy Research last month on behalf of Meat and Livestock Australia, found at the end of the nightly meal eight out of 10 were unsure if their child's nutritional needs had been met.

Almost half of them used dessert as a bargaining tool, while 39 per cent used "stern words" to make their child finish their meal.
